A Despondent Character
Writing from a despondent character’s point of view
This article will be exactly what the title says. I’m going to show the POV of a character who for whatever reason is despondent and/or under emotional distress to help give you some ideas for your own stories.
Silence. There was no worse sound ever. Logan stared at the phone as he took a drag on his cigarette. The thing hasn’t rung for days, maybe weeks. He can’t remember.
At least the cigarette gave him somebody other than himself to talk to for 10 minutes for however long the thing lasted. Oftentimes, or quite regularly, or no, all the time, him and his cigarette friend were joined by his liquor friend.
The walls seemed like a prison cell. He Watched from his window the children playing across the street in the playground. Under the watchful eye of their parents. That Could Have Been Me he thought.
That he remembered, every woman he dated had broke up with him by ghosting him. And the hundreds of women he messaged on dating sites who didn’t reply. He convinced himself that there was something Undatable about him. He was not worthy of love, not boyfriend or husband material. So, gave up on the whole falling in love thing or having anyone fall in love with him.
So he lived his life of quiet desperation, watching everything and everyone go by. With his only friends, his cigarettes and alcohol. Never realizing his addictions weren’t his friends. They were demons with their hands wrapped around his neck doing everything they could the to choke the life out of him.
