Sarah heard the footsteps crunching on the fallen leaves and heard the men’s voices saying to each other maybe she had come in here. She knew as she stood up that she could not afford self-pity at this time because she knew what the men would want her for. Looking around she saw a door with faded writing that said storage closet. The girl figured this would be her best bet to hide from the men who were coming for her.

She opened the door and saw an empty room except for the wooden shelves that were rotted and falling from their perches. Regardless though, this was her best hope from being captured and being taken to where her brothers and sisters were going and giving her no chance of rescuing them.

Sarah took the shelves and spread them out as best she could with four of them laid out for her to crawl under. And she got under them with five seconds to spare as the door to the storage closet opened and she felt the light through the cracks in the boards on her face. It was an agonizing 20 seconds as she held her breath, she could see the man in the doorway scanning his eyes throughout the closet wondering if his quarry had come in this room.

The man turned his head to the others and said, “She’s not on this level.” The man promptly shut the door to the closet and Sarah heard his footsteps…
