The Lonely Man

Here is a quick little short story for your enjoyment.

“So how have you been?” Sarah asked.

Danny turned up his lip before replying, “Like you actually care, do you?”

“I know it didn’t end so great between us.”

Danny sat on the bench that overlooked the pond and kept his eyes staring at the ground. “I suppose it wouldn’t have been such a big deal if you were the only woman who ever ghosted me.”

A few slow breaths and he continued, “But it was every woman I ever dated did that to me. Do you remember that day when I got up from working night shift and I asked if you were waiting for somebody, and you said that your mom was coming to pick you up. And then I asked if you had finished your work you said you had and then asked why. I bent down, kissed you, wrapped my arms around you and stood up lifting you off the floor and I said because picking you up sounds like a wonderful idea. Was that really fun for you? Or does the memory of being held and kissed by me make you want to puke?”

Sarah clenched her lips together as she stood before the man, “It was fun, or I would have told you to put me down.”

His eyes were red as he looked up at her, “Am I supposed to believe that?”

Sarah shrugged her shoulders, “I don’t know what to tell you Danny.”

“I wish I could remember how that felt, I remember the motions of holding and kissing you, but I don’t remember the emotions or feelings. I’ve been lonely for so long that’s the only thing I can remember feeling. One woman, she’s a single mom tried to claim that I’m such a great guy, any woman…
